UN: More people are injecting drugs globally

More people are injecting illegal drugs than previously thought, the United Nations has said in a report on global drug use.

In total, 13.2 million people injected drugs in 2021, 18 percent more than previously estimated, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said.

According to this Vienna-based agency, synthetic substances such as fentanyl and methamphetamine dominate the illegal drug market.

In the world, the number of drug users has increased by 23 percent, and disorders related to its use have increased by 45 percent within a decade, touching the figure of 40 million.

According to the report, people with mental health disorders, those with poor socio-economic conditions and young people are the most vulnerable.

Eastern Europe and North America are said to have the highest likelihood of people injecting drugs, compared to East and Southeast Asia.
