The Russian mercenary group Wagner, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, has claimed to have seized military facilities in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

Prigozhin has called for rebellion against the Russian army, although he has denied that he is aiming for a coup.

This has brought the harsh reaction of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, who has said that he is being "betrayed".

Without mentioning Prigozhin by name, Putin has vowed to punish those behind the rebellion.

"I am addressing the citizens of Russia, the personnel of the Armed Forces, law enforcement and special services, soldiers and commanders who are now fighting in their combat positions, repelling enemy attacks - as they do in a heroic way. Today I spoke once again with the commanders of all directions. I also address those who were lured into a criminal adventure by deception or threat, continuing in a serious crime – an armed rebellion.

Russia is fighting the hardest battle for its future, the whole machinery of the West is against us. Russia will defend itself, this is treason, backstabbing, and I mean trying to tear apart our society. The situation in Rostov is difficult, Russian soldiers have been ordered to neutralize the rebels. "Any internal conflict must end during the operation in Ukraine," the Russian president said.

A response has come from the Russian mercenary group, which declares that Putin has made the "wrong choice" and warns that Russia will have a new President.

"Putin made the wrong choice. So much the worse for him. Soon we will have a new President", says the message of "Wagner".
