US-Iran talks begin in Islamabad

Talks between Iran and the United States have begun in Islamabad, Pakistan. According to international media, it is unclear whether the negotiations between the delegations are taking place face-to-face or through mediators.

The US delegation is comprised of Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as well as officials from the National Security Council, the State Department and the Pentagon. The Iranian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.

If confirmed as direct, the talks are considered historic, as they would be the highest-level face-to-face negotiations between Iran and the United States since the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979.

The discussions come amid a fragile ceasefire, with both sides yet to confirm the scope of the negotiations.

Meanwhile, even if the talks take place indirectly, this is a significant moment for Pakistan and it was difficult to imagine in these six weeks of war, given how far apart the two sides are on key issues and the deep distrust.

It is expected that these talks will bring about an extended ceasefire, some form of agreement, or even a promise to continue talks. /CNA
