Netanyahu: The Gaza-Egypt border area should be under Israel's control

The border area between the Gaza Strip and Egypt must be under Israel's control, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday as the war in Gaza and other regional fronts will last for months.

Mr Netanyahu held a news conference as the war against Hamas in Gaza enters its 13th week. The conflict has fueled violence in the occupied West Bank and sparked attacks by Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

"The Philadelphi Corridor, or to be more precise, the southern point (of Gaza) must be under our control. It should be closed. It is clear that any other agreement would not ensure the demilitarization we seek," he said.

Israel has said it aims to destroy Hamas in Gaza and demilitarize and eradicate radicalism in order to prevent any repeat of the Oct. 7 killings and kidnappings in Israel by the Palestinian militant group that sparked the war.

"The battle is at its peak and we are fighting on all fronts. Achieving victory will take time. As the (IDF) chief of staff has said, the war will continue for many more months," said Mr. Netanyahu.

The Israeli prime minister threatened a direct attack on Iran over almost daily attacks from Lebanon.

"If Hezbollah expands the war, it will suffer a blow it has never seen before, and so will Iran," Mr. Netanyahu said without giving details./ VOA
