Netanyahu pushes for judicial reform

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed until next month the process to discuss the reform of the judicial system, the far-right party and member of the governing coalition Jewish Power said in a statement on Monday.

The statement says that this is postponed until the next session of the Israeli Parliament, so that "reform can go through dialogue".

Parliament will go into recess next week for the Easter holiday.

Israel has been engulfed in mass protests since Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

He was fired after speaking out against the Israeli government's controversial plans to change the judicial system.

In Jerusalem, police and soldiers used water cannons against protesters near Netanyahu's home.

On Monday morning, Israeli President Isaac Herzog called on the Government to stop the reforms.

"For the sake of the unity of the people of Israel, for the sake of responsibility, I call on you to immediately stop the legislative process", he said on Twitter, adding that "the eyes of all Israelis are on you".

The United States has said it is deeply concerned about these developments and has called for compromise.

The reforms include plans for the Israeli government to have control over the committee that appoints judges.

Something like this makes it difficult for the courts to remove a leader deemed unfit for power.

Some believe that such a change suits Netanyahu, who is already facing a corruption trial.

While the Israeli prime minister has said that the reforms are designed to deny the courts full power and that these changes were voted by the public in the last election./REL
