Looking for snipers/ Russian mercenary group recruits women and girls to fight

Women have rarely taken on front-line combat roles within the war in Ukraine until now. A Russian mercenary group is trying to recruit women for combat roles in Ukraine, according to the UK Ministry of Defence. 

In its daily intelligence briefing, the Ministry of Defense said Redut - a state-backed private military company - is calling for women to work as snipers and drone operators in its Borz battalion.

Redut - formerly known as Shield - has ties to the GRU, Russia's foreign intelligence agency, Euronews reports. 

He is part of a group of mercenary forces protecting the commercial operations of Russian companies and has been stationed in Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion. 

Comprised of former Russian special forces and members of the Wagner mercenary group, the Redut group announced that it was involved in the plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the early days of the war. 

The UK Ministry of Defense has announced that 1,100 women are currently deployed in Ukraine, serving mainly in medical support and food service roles. 

In Russia's initial offensive in Kiev at the beginning of the war, Redut suffered heavy losses of up to 90% of its fighting force./ CNA
