Modi will visit Ukraine this week

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ukraine on August 23, Ukrainian officials announced on Monday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office confirmed an earlier announcement by the Indian Foreign Ministry about Modi's visit and also announced the date.

Modi and Zelensky will discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation, as well as the signing of several documents, according to the Ukrainian Presidency.

Modi will visit Ukraine a month after visiting Moscow, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky criticized that meeting, saying on July 6 that it was "a big disappointment and a heavy blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world's largest democracy embracing the world's bloodiest criminal." India has not condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, and has called on Russia and Ukraine to resolve the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Under Modi's leadership, India aims to strengthen relations with the West while maintaining ties with Russia.

India has become a key buyer of Russian oil after sanctions imposed on Moscow by the United States and its allies closed most Western markets to Russian exports.

India now gets 40 percent of its imported oil from Russia, according to analysts.
