Blinken, in Israel for the cease-fire in Gaza

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will be in Israel on August 18 as part of Washington's diplomatic efforts to push forward a ceasefire in Gaza that would end fighting between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group. declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

This will be the tenth visit of the US top diplomat to the region since the war in Gaza began in October 2023. Blinken's visit will come just days after the US presented proposals that other mediators, Qatar and Egypt , believe that they will enable overcoming the differences between the parties.

US officials have expressed optimism about reaching a ceasefire agreement, which includes the release of hostages, but added that there is still work to be done.

In Israel, Blinken will meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials.

Negotiations to reach a ceasefire agreement are expected to continue next week in Cairo. They are being held at a time when fears have grown that tensions in the Middle East could escalate.

Iran has vowed to retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. Israel has not claimed responsibility for this murder.

Washington has repeatedly warned Iran not to attack Israel.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 250 others.

The Israeli military has responded with an offensive in Gaza that has so far killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Palestinian health authorities. Israel has said that it has eliminated 17,000 Hamas fighters./ REL
