Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his troops had strengthened positions and expanded territory in Russia's Kursk region, almost two weeks after launching their incursion.

Ukraine said it has taken control of 82 settlements in an area of ??1,150 square kilometers since the start of the surprise incursion on August 6.

Zelensky said Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskiy had reported to him that Ukrainian troops had continued their advance and arrested Russian soldiers.

"Thank you to all the soldiers and commanders who are imprisoning Russian soldiers and bringing our soldiers and civilians held by Russia closer to release," Zelensky said in a statement published on Telegram.

"General Syrskuy has reported to me about the strengthening of the positions of our forces in the Kursk region and the expansion of the territory".

The Ukrainian military said in a statement that troops had successfully made further progress in Kursk, without providing further details. Earlier, the army had announced an advance of 35 kilometers.

Russia has described the incursion in Kursk as a "big provocation" and has vowed to retaliate, as the invasion that Moscow launched against Ukraine in 2022 continues./ Rel
