Israel's military actions in Lebanon have harmed the United Nations peacekeeping and humanitarian mission in the country, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said on Monday.
Concern is growing for UN peacekeepers after the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said a number of its soldiers were injured in the latest attacks. The Israeli military has accused Hezbollah of operating in areas near UNIFIL posts.
UN troops in Lebanon "play a critical stabilizing role in the region and should be part of efforts to reduce tensions," Peters wrote in a post on X.
"Any targeting of UN peacekeepers is a violation of international law and is completely unacceptable," he said. "Israel's actions undermine the ability of the United Nations to carry out its mandate, which includes mediating conflicts and providing humanitarian support."
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the UN that UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in Lebanon are not on track and called on Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to remove them./ CNA
