American President Joe Biden said on November 21 that it is "very close" to reaching an agreement on the release of several hostages being held by Hamas - a Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The US president said he hoped that some of the hostages would return to their families "very soon".

"We are now very, very close. We can bring home some of the hostages very quickly," Biden said.

"At the moment, things are looking good," he added.

Biden said he did not want to comment further on the matter because of the sensitive nature of the matter.

Biden's statement comes after Hamas officials said a deal could be reached soon to release the hostages. Meanwhile, Israeli officials announced that they will hold high-level discussions on the hostage issue on Tuesday.

On October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people, it captured another 240 people. So far, Hamas has freed four hostages, Israel has rescued one, and the bodies of two hostages have been found near the Shifa hospital in Gaza, where there has been heavy fighting.

More than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza during Israel's retaliatory attacks, while Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas.
