This photo released by Italian automaker Ferrari on May 25, 2026 shows the new all-electric car called "Luce," which means "light" in Italian, unveiled in Rome on May 25.

The Ferrari Luce will have four doors, five seats and a 600-liter trunk - an unprecedented amount of space for a car with the fiery horse symbol. The "Luce" car was developed with the help of former Apple design director Jony Ive and his LoveFrom collective.

The first Luce models are expected to be ready for delivery by the fourth quarter of 2026, with a price tag of around 550,000 euros (approximately $640,000).

The launch comes at a challenging time for automakers and their electric mobility plans. Several manufacturers, including Ferrari, are reviewing their electrification goals due to factors such as difficulties in the US market and increasing competition from domestic manufacturers in China.

However, it also comes at a time when the war in Iran and the resulting pressure on fuel prices are highlighting some of the benefits of electric vehicles. The car's rear end with four circular lights is considered an homage to models like the 360 ??Modena, although some early reactions to its appearance were not entirely positive.

How did markets and observers react?

The initial reaction in the markets was skeptical. When trading resumed in Italy on Tuesday after the Pentecost holiday, Ferrari shares immediately fell about 6%, losing about 3.7 billion euros in market capitalization. The stock then stabilized after the initial drop.

However, judging by the reactions on social media, many people criticized the design and exterior aesthetics more than the electric motor or the strategy that this car represents for Ferrari.

Unlike Tesla and the new Chinese electric car manufacturers, Ferrari hasn't turned the entire interior panel into a single touchscreen.

What did Ferrari say about the new Luce model?

Ferrari Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, fresh from their race in Montreal, unveiled the car in Rome. The launch comes at a time when Porsche and Honda are reviewing their targets for the transition to electric vehicles.

As CEO Benedetto Vigna said, due to the long development time in the industry, "it's the result of five years of work."

Ferrari, known for its two-seater sports cars and powerful petrol engines, hopes that the first five-seater model with a large boot will allow it to compete in markets like China, where electric vehicles are widespread and cars with large combustion engines are heavily taxed. "There are many in our customer base who are looking for something completely different, to use at different times in their lives," said Enrico Galliera, Ferrari's director of marketing and commercial.

Vigna also expects half of Luce's orders to come from new customers.

Luce's performance

Despite its 2.2-ton weight, the car promises high performance. Four electric motors, one for each wheel, produce more than 1,000 horsepower and allow for different power distribution for improved steering and cornering.

Ferrari says the Luce can reach a top speed of 310 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 2.5 seconds.

The large 122 kWh battery allows for a theoretical range of over 500 kilometers. At a fast charging station, the car can reach 10% to 80% charge in 20 to 25 minutes.

Ferrari is trying to retain a traditional sound element by amplifying the natural sounds of the electrical system to create an acoustic experience in the cabin. The heavily glazed design is intended to allow as much "light" as possible to enter. Meanwhile, Ferrari has chosen to retain some physical controls in the cabin, in contrast to the fully digital approach of some competitors such as Tesla and Chinese manufacturers./ DW
