Head of atrocities in the Darfur region/ EU sanctions Sudan's paramilitary

The European Union has imposed sanctions on a senior leader of a Sudanese paramilitary group for serious and ongoing atrocities.

It concerns the actions of his forces in the more than two-year war with the national army, including in the western Darfur region where they captured the army's last stronghold last month.

The measures announced against Abdel-Rahim Hamdan Dagalo follow similar sanctions that the EU and the US have imposed on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the paramilitary group involved in a power struggle with the Sudanese army.

Washington imposed sanctions on Dagalos at the beginning of the conflict, in September 2023.

Dagalo is the number two in RSF and is the brother of the group's leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council said it imposed the measures against Dagalo for violations committed by his troops, including during the occupation of el-Fasher last month, a key town in Darfur./CNA
