Cold weather begins in Europe/ Avalanche risk warning in Poland

Mountain watchers in Poland's Tatra mountain range warned on Friday of a moderate avalanche risk, after heavy overnight snowfall created dangerous conditions for winter tourism.

A moderate avalanche warning means that landslides may be triggered when slopes are subjected to significant additional load, but large spontaneous avalanches are not believed to be possible.

Officials in the Tatra Mountains said the second level for avalanches now applies to all high-altitude areas of the Tatras, the mountain range that forms Poland's southern border with Slovakia.

Regarding this risk, officials advised that only climbers with experience in winter mountaineering should go to higher areas and that they should carry the appropriate equipment, including an ice axe and a helmet. /CNA
