Russia today added the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) to its list of “undesirable” organizations, a move that bars it from operating in the country.

Russian authorities did not give a reason for their decision, and HRW, which was forced to close its offices in Russia in 2022, has yet to comment on the developments.

Since the start of the war against Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian Ministry of Justice has banned dozens of organizations that criticized the Kremlin's policies or Moscow's stance on the conflict.

Human Rights Watch, headquartered in New York and operating abroad, investigates and publishes reports on abuses committed by governments and armed forces around the world.

The organization has repeatedly denounced the Russian attack on Ukraine and accused the Russian military of committing a host of violations, which Russia denies.

The list of "undesirable" organizations includes Reporters Without Borders, environmental NGOs WWF and Greenpeace, anti-corruption organization Transparency International and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Inclusion on the list also means that anyone working for the organization or sending donations to it risks persecution in Russia. /CNA
