Hong Kong fire tragedy: Death toll rises to 128, dozens still missing

The death toll from a devastating fire that engulfed a high-rise building complex in Hong Kong has risen to 128.

Meanwhile, 79 other people were injured, while dozens of others are still missing. The Wang Fuk Court blocks were being renovated at the time the fire broke out. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but officials say polystyrene and protective mesh placed on the outside of windows helped it spread.

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of corruption during the renovation works, while three other people were previously arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Some 2,311 firefighters were deployed to bring the fire under control, which spread to seven of the eight apartment blocks of Wang Fuk Court.

The Hong Kong government has also set up shelters and support centers for displaced residents. Volunteer groups have been packing and organizing supplies for those affected, including clothing and hygiene products. /CNA
