Israel carries out attack in southern Syria / At least 10 casualties reported

At least 10 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a village in southern Syria overnight, state media said, in one of the deadliest such incidents in months. Children were reportedly among the dead.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said troops entered the village, on the edge of the occupied Golan Heights, to stop militants who they said had carried out advanced terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians.

Six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the clashes. The Israeli military (IDF) said it was targeting the militant group Jaama Islamiya. Israel regularly carries out strikes on Syrian villages, saying it is acting to prevent the presence of armed groups.

Since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad nearly a year ago, Israel has been moving its forces through an area in the Golan Heights in southern Syria, where a number of anti-Israel groups and cells operate.

Israel says it will not allow the Syrian army, which it considers a threat, to be stationed there. The US has been mediating talks between Israel and Syria for months on a security agreement in the area between the two sides, but without success. /CNA
