Former President Jair Bolsonaro Arrested in Brazil

Brazil's far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro was arrested on Saturday at his villa in the capital Brasília. Federal police confirmed they executed a preventive arrest warrant issued by the country's Supreme Court.

Local reports suggest that Bolsonaro, 70, has been taken to a federal police base, about seven miles from the presidential palace he occupied from 2019 to 2022, when he lost the election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and attempted to stage a coup.

The reasons for the arrest warrant were not immediately clear. Brazilian media reported that the decision was made to “preserve public order.” Bolsonaro’s lawyer, Celso Vilardi, told AFP: “He has been arrested, but I don’t know why.”

In September, Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for organizing a coup to prevent the 2022 election winner, Lula da Silva, from taking office. However, the court has not yet ordered the execution of this sentence, while legal proceedings and appeals are ongoing.
