The former president of El Salvador is sentenced to 14 years in prison

A court in El Salvador has sentenced former president Mauricio Funes and his defense minister to more than a decade in prison for ties to criminal groups and abuse of office.

Funes was sentenced to 14 years in prison, while former defense minister David Munguya was sentenced to 18 years, Reuters reports. 

"We found that these two former officials, who had an obligation to protect the citizens of El Salvador, negotiated their lives in exchange for favors during the electoral process, acting as if they were members of a gang," said state prosecutor Rodolfo Delgado.

Munguya was first arrested in 2020 on suspicion of illegal association and other crimes related to the ceasefire agreement between the gangs.

While Funes, who ruled from 2009 to 2014, lives in Nicaragua and obtained the citizenship of that country.

Nicaragua's constitution does not allow the extradition of its citizens.
