Iran attacks world's largest liquefied natural gas facility/ Footage from

Iran attacked yesterday evening with missiles the industrial city of Ras Laffan in Qatar, where the world's largest liquefied natural gas export facility is located.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry denounced the attack as a dangerous escalation of the conflict, a flagrant violation of state sovereignty, and a direct threat to its national security and regional stability.

In the statement, the Foreign Ministry said that Qatar reserves the right to respond in accordance with the right of self-defense guaranteed by international law.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard had threatened to attack energy facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates after Israel bombed a natural gas processing facility in Iran. Emergency teams were sent to bring the fires under control in Ras Laffan, and no casualties were reported.

Qatar halted LNG production on March 2 due to Iranian drone attacks on Ras Laffan and Mesaieed Industrial City. The Gulf state is the world's second-largest LNG exporter, after the United States. Qatar accounts for nearly 20% of global LNG exports, according to data from energy consulting firm Kpler.

Increasing attacks on oil and gas infrastructure in the Middle East threaten to intensify the massive energy supply disruption caused by the Iran war.

Oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has plummeted due to Iranian attacks on merchant ships. The strait is the most important trade chokepoint for oil, with about 20% of world supplies passing through it before the war.

Brent oil prices could average $130 in the second and third quarters if there are widespread attacks on energy infrastructure and the Strait remains closed for an extended period, Citigroup analysts told clients in a report on Wednesday. /CNA
