Iran/ 10 professors are fired after supporting student protests

Iranian authorities have fired at least 10 university professors who supported the nationwide protests that began last September, following the death of Mahsa Amin in police custody.

A few weeks before the anniversary of her death, Hamideh Khademi and Ameneh Aali, two professors from Allameh University in Tehran, were fired over the phone, while the Student Council of Iran announced that seven other professors from the Faculty of Literature at the University of Tehran were also fired. Tehran.

Universities and students have long led efforts for greater political and social freedom in Iran. In 1999, students protested the closure of the daily newspaper Reformisti, prompting a brutal raid on Tehran University dormitories that left one student dead.

Amin's death while in custody for violating the headscarf law in September last year has once again made campuses hotbed of protests.

Over the years, the authorities have arrested student activists and leaders, sentencing them to prison and banning their studies.

On August 26, Ali Sharifi Zarchi, a faculty member in the Department of Computer Engineering at Tehran's Sharif University, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had received a letter announcing his dismissal from the university.

During the nationwide protests, Zarchi consistently supported the students and at one point declared that he would suspend all classes until all the students arrested at Sharif University were released.

The HARNA news agency says at least 700 university students have been arrested during the recent unrest.

Most of them face punishments such as imprisonment and whipping, while dozens more have been expelled from universities or suspended from their studies./REL
