Unusual/ An 8 cm worm is found in a woman's brain

In a world first, scientists say an 8cm worm has been found alive in the brain of an Australian woman.

The woman suffered from what doctors called an "unusual constellation of symptoms" with stomach pains, coughs and night sweats, degrading into forgetfulness and increasing depression.

The red parasite may have existed in the Australian woman's brain for up to two months.

Researchers are warning that the case highlights the increased risk of diseases and infections passing from animals to humans.

"Everybody in that operating room was shocked when the surgeon took the forceps to grab an abnormality and the abnormality turned out to be a live, vibrant 8cm red worm," said Sanjaya Senanayake, a pathologist at Canberra Hospital.

"Even if you take out the yck factor, this is a new infection never before documented in a human being."

The roundworm Ophidascaris robertsi is common in carpet pythons, non-venomous snakes found throughout much of Australia.

Scientists say the woman most likely acquired the roundworm after gathering a type of native grass, warrigal greens, near a lake near where she lived and using it for cooking.

According to Mehrab Hossain, an Australian expert, said the woman "acquired" the worm after the plants she used for cooking were contaminated by python feces and parasite eggs./ CNA
