The lawyer of Mahsha Amini, the young woman who died in September 2022 after being arrested by the morality police and whose death sparked anti-government protests in Iran, was sentenced today to one year in prison, writes Protothema.

"My client, Saleh Nikbakht, has unfortunately been sentenced to the maximum sentence, i.e. one year in prison, for propaganda against the system," said his lawyer, Ali Rezaei, Ham Hihan newspaper reported on its website.

Nikbakht represented the parents of Mahsha Amini, the 22-year-old who died after being arrested on charges of violating Iran's strict dress code for women. In late August, Rezai said the lawyer would be tried after speaking to local and foreign media about Amin's case.

The lawyer, who is of Kurdish origin, has represented several figures in Iran, including director Jafa Panahi, who was released on bail last February after spending seven months in prison.

"It was unexpected to impose the maximum sentence on Nikbakht, 73 years old", added the lawyer, expressing the hope that the sentence would be overturned in the Court of Appeal./ CNA
