Israel's Foreign Ministry said on July 28 that Hezbollah "crossed all red lines" with the previous day's rocket attack on the annexed Golan Heights. During this attack, 12 young people were killed.
"Saturday's massacre constitutes a violation of all red lines by Hezbollah. "Hezbollah is not an army that fights against an army, but is a terrorist organization that deliberately attacks civilians," the ministry said in a statement.
The Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the deadly attack.
Even the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has warned Hezbollah that it will "pay a high price for this attack, a price it has not paid so far".
Meanwhile, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari called the attack the deadliest attack on Israeli civilians since Hamas — the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union — attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, sparking the Gaza war.
He said that 20 others were injured during the attack.
The spokesman for the head of Hezbollah, Mohammed Afif, told the Associated Press that the group "categorically carried out the attack in Maidan Shams".
It is unusual for Hezbollah to deny any attack.
The attack on a soccer field, as several youths were playing soccer, followed cross-border violence earlier on Saturday, when Hezbollah said three of its fighters were killed, without specifying where.
The Israeli military said its air force targeted a Hezbollah weapons depot in the border village of Kfar Kila, adding that there were militants inside at the time of the attack.
Hezbollah said its fighters carried out 10 separate attacks using rockets and drones against Israeli military posts. The group claimed that among the targets attacked was an Israeli army command in Maleh Golani. He also said that the attacks were a response to Israeli airstrikes in villages in the south of Lebanon.
In 1967, Israel took the Golan Heights from Syria and annexed the territory in 1981.
Otherwise, since the war in Gaza began, Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire on the border almost on a daily basis, raising fears that the conflict could expand./ REL
