On July 27, the Israeli army ordered the evacuation of overpopulated areas of Gaza, declared humanitarian zones.

The army said it was planning an operation against fighters from Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in Khan Yunis, including parts of Muwas, a makeshift tent camp where thousands of people have taken shelter.

The order was issued in response to the firing of a rocket, which Israel said was fired from the area. This is the second evacuation order issued this week for areas designated to house Palestinians who have been displaced by fighting in other parts of Gaza. Many Palestinians have been displaced several times as a result of Israel's air and ground offensive.

On Monday, following an evacuation order, several Russian airstrikes were carried out around Han Yunis, killing at least 70 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which cited data from Nasser Hospital.

This area is part of the 60 square kilometer "humanitarian zone" where Israel has told Palestinians to take refuge as a result of the war.

Most of the area is filled with tent camps in which there is a lack of sanitation and health facilities. Palestinians sheltering in the area also have limited access to aid, the United Nations and aid groups have said.

About 1.8 million Palestinians are sheltered in this 60 square kilometer area, according to Israeli data. This figure is more than half of Gaza's pre-war population of 2.3 million.

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 39,100 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza so far, according to data from the Ministry of Health in the territory led by Hamas./REL
