The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has said that he considers border controls with neighboring countries as a reasonable measure to limit irregular migration to Germany.

"In general, we intend to continue strict controls at the German borders," Scholz said in an interview published Friday in the regional magazine, Saarbrücker Zeitung.

"We want to limit irregular migration, as I have said before. The numbers must be reduced."

According to him, migration is necessary for the German labor market.

"However, there are too many people who come to us irregularly, who claim to seek protection from persecution, but they cannot provide any reason for asylum and then they are rejected", said Scholz.

He also mentioned the current control points, such as those with the French border during the Olympic Games.

Controls at those points will continue to be carried out until September 30. Regarding border controls with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, the German Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, has ordered the return of physical controls in October.

The German government has said those checks limit irregular migration and help fight people-smuggling.

Although there should be no border controls in the countries of the Schengen Area, many countries have reintroduced controls due to migration and other concerns. According to the German Federal Police, in the period from June 7 to July 19, 9,172 unauthorized entries into Germany were registered and 6,401 of these people were turned back.

In the first half of this year, 121,416 people applied for asylum in Germany, about 19 percent less than in the same period last year./ Rel
