The man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi is being held in jail without bail

A San Francisco judge has ordered the man accused of breaking into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's home, beating her husband and trying to kidnap him to be held without bail.

Adam Lipson, the attorney for defendant David DePape, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf during a brief hearing Tuesday in Superior Court in San Francisco.

It was the first public appearance since the attack early Friday for Mr. DePape, an extremist activist drawn to conspiracy theories.

Prosecutors allege he wanted to kidnap Ms. Pelosi and break her knees as a warning to other Democratic lawmakers.
