France seizes Russian tanker in Mediterranean/ Macron: Offshore operation, investigation begins

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French Navy has seized a Russian tanker, which is subject to international sanctions and is suspected of flying a false flag. 

"The operation took place on the high seas, in the Mediterranean, with the cooperation of many of our allies. It was carried out in full compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. A judicial investigation has been launched and the ship has been diverted from its course," Macron said in a post on the "X" platform.

In a statement, the French military said the oil tanker "Grinch", which was coming from Murmansk, Russia, had been seized.

The case was referred to the Marseille prosecutor and the tanker is being diverted to an anchorage to continue inspections under the escort of the French navy. /CNA
