The controversial figure of Brigitte Bardot/ French politicians with two

French politicians are deeply divided over how, or whether, to honor Brigitte Bardot after her death, as the screen legend's later politics proved as controversial as her influential films.

Bardot died on Sunday at the age of 91 at her home in Saint-Tropez on the southern Mediterranean coast. News of her death prompted a flood of tributes to a woman who became a symbol of French culture, sexual liberation and cinematic brilliance through films such as "And God Created Woman."

She will also be remembered for her animal rights activism. She traveled to the Arctic to report on the slaughter of fur seals; she condemned the use of animals in laboratory experiments; and she opposed sending monkeys into space.

However, its legacy remains hotly contested.

In particular, she criticized the Muslim practice of slaughtering sheep during annual religious holidays such as Eid al-Adha.

In her later years, Bardot was critical of the #MeToo movement. She said in an interview that most actors protesting sexual harassment in the film industry were "hypocritical" and "ridiculous" because many of them "harassed" producers to get roles.

She said she had never been a victim of sexual harassment and found it "attractive to be told I was beautiful or that I had a nice little butt."

In her last television interview earlier this year, Bardot openly rejected feminism. "Feminism is not my thing... I like men," she told BFM TV, before cutting off the interviewer's suggestion that the two were compatible with a firm: "No!"
