Berlin responds to Moscow/ 4 out of 5 Russian consulates in Germany are expected

Russian-German relations are not good, as the German government announced on Wednesday that Russia will have to close four of its five consultants across Germany.

The move comes after Moscow imposed a limit on the number of staff at the German Embassy and related bodies in Russia. The Kremlin said that only 350 German diplomats will be able to stay in Russia.

German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger told reporters in Berlin that the move was intended to create a "parity of personnel and structures" between the two countries.

Russia has consulates in Bonn, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich. Burger said Russia would be allowed to continue operating its embassy in Berlin and another consulate after the end of the year.

The Russian government had recently said that an upper limit of 350 German government officials, including those working in cultural bodies and schools, could stay in Russia. Burger said this means Germany will have to close its consulates in Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and Kaliningrad by November. Only the embassy in Moscow and the consulate in St. Petersburg will remain open, he added.

Burger said Germany's retaliatory measure was unfortunate, but added that the war meant there was "simply no basis" for much bilateral activity between the two countries. "But it is the behavior of the Russian side that has brought us to this situation."

Burger said Germany's decision to concentrate its remaining staff at the embassy and a key consulate would "maintain diplomatic presence in Russia"./ CNA.al
