Victims and injured from the Russian bombings in Ukraine

At least three people were killed and several others wounded in shelling launched by Russian forces in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev on Thursday, authorities said.

After a reported series of 17 drone and missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital during May, Russian forces began the month of June by continuing to attack the capital in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Kyiv city administration reported that a child was among the dead and 10 other people were injured. The attack also damaged residential buildings, a medical clinic, a water pipe and cars.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported that the Air Force intercepted 10 missiles, which it identified as Iskander short-range ballistic missiles.

Russia has repeatedly targeted Kiev with waves of drone and missile attacks since the invasion began, but attacks against the capital have intensified over the past month as Ukraine prepares for a counteroffensive.

Ukraine's air defenses have become increasingly effective at intercepting and shooting down Russian drones and missiles, but missile debris that breaks up in the sky can cause fires and injure people below.

In the Desnianski district, debris fell on a children's hospital and a nearby high-rise building. Two schools and a police department were damaged.

In another district, Dniprovski, a residential building was damaged by burning debris and a huge plume of smoke rose, the blast wave blew out windows, parked cars caught fire and debris fell on streets and yards.

In the Darnitski district, a water pipe and a residential building were affected, and the blast wave broke the windows.

After a woman was killed watching an airstrike from her balcony earlier this week, Kiev authorities urged residents to heed warning sirens and stay in shelters or other safe places.

"You have to be alert, as ballistic missiles fly at incredible speeds. From the moment the alert is announced until the missile arrives, you only have a few seconds," they warned.

On Wednesday, Russian forces carried out three airstrikes in the Kherson region, along with rocket and heavy artillery strikes in other parts of the region.
