The Russian media announced on Thursday that the Deputy Chief of the Russian Military Staff has been arrested on charges of accepting large-scale bribes.

General Vadim Shamarin is one of four senior military officials arrested over the past month on bribery charges.

Deputy Minister of Defense Timur Ivanov was sentenced to detention on April 23 for accepting bribes.

General Yuri Kuznetsov, head of the Defense Ministry's personnel department, and General Ivan Popov, former commander of Russia's 58th Army, also face similar charges.

According to reports, Mr. Shamarin's house was raided as part of the investigation. He will be held in custody for 2 months and it remains unclear how he will respond to the charges.

As of 2020, he supervised the military communications unit of the Russian army.

The Kremlin did not provide further details on the case, stressing that anti-corruption operations were being carried out across several state agencies.

"The fight against corruption is an ongoing commitment," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. "It is not about a campaign. It is an ongoing commitment. It is an integral part of the activity of our law enforcement agencies."

The deputy director of the federal prison for the Moscow region, Vladimir Telayev, was also arrested on Thursday on charges of taking large-scale bribes, according to local media. The investigators asked a court in Moscow to send him to custody./ VOA
