British authorities are alarmed/ Number of meningitis cases increases

British authorities are dealing with an outbreak of meningitis in southern England. The UK Health and Safety Agency (UKHSA) has announced that there has been an increase in the number of infections with meningococcal group B.

So far, 13 cases have been confirmed. The total number of registered meningococcal infections is 18, while there are 11 suspected cases.

In recent days, two young people, an 18-year-old schoolgirl and a University of Kent student, have lost their lives from meningitis in the affected region.

A very unusual explosion

Meningococcus B is a bacteria that can cause severe inflammation of the brain membranes (meningitis) and blood poisoning. The disease can progress very quickly.

"This is a very unusual eruption ," Robin May, scientific director of the British Agency, told the BBC.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) meningitis guidelines, in case of clinical suspicion of meningococcal infection, antibiotic treatment should be initiated immediately.

The bacteria are spread through droplets from coughing, sneezing or kissing. The first signs of infection are often similar to the flu: fever, headache, nausea, chills and fatigue. In severe cases, the infection can lead to septic shock, organ failure and brain damage. /DW
