South Africa to investigate how 17 of its citizens were manipulated to fight in

The South African government announced on Thursday that it has received calls for help from 17 citizens who have joined mercenary forces in the Russia-Ukraine war, and that it is working to return them home.

According to the statement, they were lured into participating in the war under the pretext of high-paying employment contracts.

All of them are between the ages of 20 and 39 and have been stranded in the war-torn region of Ukraine, Donbas.

"President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into the circumstances that led to the recruitment of these young men into these mercenary activities," the statement said.

South Africa did not indicate which warring party its citizens were fighting for.

Under South African law, citizens are prohibited from providing military assistance to a foreign government, and are also prohibited from serving in the armies of foreign governments, unless authorized by the South African Government.

In August, the South African government warned young people to beware of fake job offers in Russia that were circulating on social media, following reports that several South African women had been tricked into manufacturing drones. /REL
