Ukraine denies Russia's claims: Our forces are fighting to hold Pokrovsk

Ukraine denied Russian claims that its forces are surrounded as they fight to hold Pokrovsk, a strategic town in eastern Ukraine that is facing intense Russian attacks.

This important hub in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk lies between major supply lines for the Ukrainian army, and Moscow has been trying to take control of it for more than a year.

Up to 300 Russian soldiers were fighting in the city in the new offensive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this week. He visited troops near Pokrovsk on Tuesday, promising to do "everything" to keep it under Kiev's control.

Later on Wednesday, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army released a video of Zelensky inspecting troops “in the direction of Pokrovsk.” The Ukrainian military did not specify when the video was shot.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities decided to suspend the railway line to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, two large cities in the region that are still under Kiev's control and are located near Pokrovsk.

The Russian military said on Tuesday that it was “tightening the enemy’s encirclement” in Pokrovsk and claimed to have taken control of several dozen buildings in the city. But on Wednesday, the Ukrainian General Staff said “there is no encirclement of our units and divisions.”

"Measures have been taken to block the enemy, who is attempting to penetrate" the city, the statement published on social media said.

"Active resistance to the efforts of enemy infantry groups to establish positions is still ongoing."

Pokrovsku, which had about 60,000 residents before the war, is now largely an abandoned and war-torn town. Ukraine sent special forces over the weekend to bolster the city's defenses. Russia has taken control of large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine since the invasion began in February 2022. /REL
