Cargo plane crashes into sea in Hong Kong, two dead

A cargo plane at Hong Kong International Airport crashed into the sea, killing two staff members.

Emirates flight EK9788 was arriving from Dubai at around 03:50 local time (19:50 GMT) when it skidded off the runway and collided with an airport patrol vehicle.

The two people inside the vehicle died, while the four crew members on board the plane survived the crash.

This marks one of the deadliest aviation incidents in Hong Kong in years, the city's international airport has had a good safety record.

Authorities have launched an investigation, while questions remain about the path the plane took after landing. Airport officials have said they gave the plane precise instructions and that there are signs on the runway to guide planes.

The airport's executive director of operations, Steven Yiu, said the patrol car, at the time, was traveling on a road outside the runway fence "at a safe distance from the runway." The plane then left the runway, crashed into the fence and hit the vehicle, pushing it into the sea, Yiu explained.

"Normally, the plane should not turn back from the sea," he said at a press conference hours after the incident, adding that the plane did not send a distress signal when it was landing.

Divers managed to find the bodies of the people who were in the patrol vehicle at sea.

In a statement to the BBC, a spokesman said the plane "suffered damage during landing in Hong Kong. The crew has been confirmed to be safe and there was no cargo on board."

The four crew members on board the plane had opened the plane's emergency doors immediately after the crash. They were spotted by fire service personnel who arrived on the scene within two minutes and were rescued./CNA, translated by BBC
