Rising prices in Albania push drivers to North Macedonia for cheaper fuel

The increase in fuel prices in Albania has increased the movement of drivers towards North Macedonia to be supplied with cheaper diesel. Dozens of vehicles pass through the Qafë Thana border crossing every day, mainly from the areas of Pogradec, Prrenjas and beyond.

Truck drivers say the price difference remains significant. A driver from Prrenjas says that oil in Macedonia costs around 160 new lek and is supplied once a month, as for him it is "worth it" to make this move. While another from Pogradec points out that the price there has been even lower, around 140 lek, often making the choice to be supplied across the border.

"The price of oil is around 160 new lek; we get fuel once a month. The prices, compared to Albania, are lower. I come from Prrenjas; for me it is worth getting fuel in Macedonia. I don't know about others."

"In Macedonia, oil was 140 lek, while in Albania it is more expensive. When I get the chance, I go to Macedonia. I am from Pogradec."

On the other hand, leaders in North Macedonia also confirm this phenomenon. A citizen from Struga says that the price of oil has increased recently, but still remains lower than in Albania, which has led to a constant influx of vehicles with Albanian license plates at gas stations. He adds that he expects that there will be interventions in Albania to reduce prices as well.

"Previously in Macedonia it was around 70 dinars, while now it has increased by 20 dinars. We have often seen cars with Albanian license plates being supplied with diesel in Macedonia. They should lower it here too, I hope the government will take measures."

Meanwhile, a leader from Skopje considers oil in his country to be cheaper and of higher quality, emphasizing that movements between the two countries are frequent, not only for supply, but also for tourist purposes.

"Yes, oil is very cheap and very good in Macedonia. Today we are heading towards Pogradec, towards Lake Ohrid, and we will stay there for about 3 hours."

This phenomenon continues to be visible in Qafë Thanë, where price differences are directly affecting citizens' choices for fuel supply./ CNA
