Energy production, private companies accounted for 54% of the total, the share

Net electricity production in the country reached 4.4 million MWh during the first four months of 2026, with private producers generating more energy than the Albanian Electricity Corporation (KESH), according to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority (ERE).

The energy balance shows that net domestic production reached 4,404,981 MWh in the period January-April. Of this amount, KESH produced 2,025,837 MWh, or about 46% of the total, while private and concessionary producers, including photovoltaic plants, produced 2,379,144 MWh, or approximately 54%.

Hydropower plants continue to dominate domestic production, but solar energy is gaining more and more space. According to ERE data, photovoltaic plants produced a total of 230,004 MWh during the four-month period.

Of this amount, 50,487 MWh were produced by plants connected to the OSHEE distribution network, while 179,517 MWh were produced by photovoltaic plants connected to the OST transmission network.

Solar energy accounted for about 5.2% of net domestic production, remaining a relatively small contribution compared to hydropower, but with positive progress towards the goal of diversifying production sources.

Despite domestic production being higher than reported consumption, the country continued to rely on electricity imports during January-April. The balance resulted in a positive import balance of 1,293,545 MWh during the period.

This amount is equivalent to about 41.6% of domestic electricity consumption, which reached 3,111,436 MWh in the first four months of the year.

On the supply side, KESH sold 1,518,164 MWh of energy to the Universal Service Provider (USP) to cover the needs of household consumers and small businesses.

Meanwhile, the Free Market Supplier (FTL) secured 1,283,142 MWh of energy from private producers, the liberalized market and other sources for its customers and to cover network losses. /Monitor.al
