Lowest level in a year/ Bitcoin falls below $66,000

Cryptocurrency prices have fallen sharply in recent weeks, and some analysts warn of more difficulties ahead for investors.

The price of bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, fell below $66,000 on Thursday afternoon, hitting its lowest level in more than a year. Analysts had seen $70,000 as a key threshold below which prices were likely to fall further.

The digital asset has fallen nearly 50% from its last high in October, when bitcoin peaked at around $126,000. Bitcoin was down more than 10% in trading Thursday as of 2:45 p.m. ET.

Barry Bannister, chief equity strategist at Stifel, wrote in a research note on Wednesday that bitcoin could ultimately hit a low of around $38,000, a drop of about 70%.

He said he came to this conclusion based on trends and price movements during past "bitcoin super-bears," or periods of major declines.

“This is not a ‘bullish market correction’ or ‘a bearish one,’” Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, a cryptocurrency money manager, wrote in a note on Monday./ CNA, translated by CNBC
