Fires in Southern Europe/ Associated Press: Battle with flames and evacuations

The renowned international media outlet Associated Press, in an article published today regarding the fires that have engulfed Southern Europe, also mentioned the situation in Albania.

AP writes that fires intensified across southern Europe on Wednesday after an overnight battle to defend the perimeter of Greece's third-largest city, with at least three more deaths reported in Spain, Turkey and Albania.

“An 80-year-old man died in a fire south of the capital, Tirana, officials said Wednesday. Residents of four villages were evacuated in central Albania near a former army ammunition depot. Explosions from buried World War II artillery shells were reported in the southern district of Korca, near the Greek border. Authorities said dozens of homes were burned in a central region of the country,” AP writes.

According to the AP, authorities across European countries have cited multiple causes for the massive fires, including careless farming practices, poorly maintained power cables and summer lightning storms. The European Union has sent rapid aid to fire-stricken countries, including non-member states, with ground crews and water-dropping aircraft./CNA
