Criminal amnesty approved/ Lamallari: 447 people are immediately released from

The Council of Ministers approved this Thursday the Criminal Amnesty draft law, an initiative that aims to ease prison overcrowding and provide a second chance for people convicted of minor criminal offenses.

According to the Ministry of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, thousands of people will benefit from the amnesty. 447 convicts will be immediately released from prison, while 853 others will have their sentences reduced.

" At today's Government meeting, we approved the Criminal Amnesty, the initiative we presented about a month ago, and as of today, this decision is being submitted to the Parliament. From the latest data coordinated with the General Directorate of Prisons, the Probation Service and the General Prosecutor's Office, it results that a full 447 people benefit from immediate release and 853 others from reduced sentences, while the Probation Service amnesties 5,077 convicts with alternative measures. Furthermore, starting in 2024, criminal prosecution for a full 14,000 proceedings for minor offenses is discontinued. In addition to a clear humane act and a second opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration, this is a concrete step that reduces the pressure of prison population and focuses justice where the social danger is real. This is not about tolerance towards crime, but about a measured approach that aims at reintegration and more efficient use of criminal justice as we are working to "reduce the unnecessary use of pre-trial detention, in line with the legitimate concerns raised by the Council of Europe as well as European standards ," said Minister Lamallari.

Lamallari emphasized that beneficiaries include women, minors and foreign citizens, while cases handled by the Prosecutor's Office and the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime are excluded from this act.

The draft law will be submitted to the Assembly, where it will initially be reviewed in parliamentary committees before being voted on in a plenary session. /CNA
