The elected head of the Municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, told the Greek television "Open TV" that the case against him is apparently a political trap set up by one person. He emphasized that the witness was paid for the testimony given. 

"The assertion of the witness as well as of the police director that the witness was paid for the testimony, in any democratic country, would also close the court case. The most disturbing fact of the listening session is precisely that it was revealed that the prosecution had no knowledge of the payment that the police had given", said the elected mayor of Himara.

During the interview, Beleri also accused the Prosecutor's Office, since according to him he violated the law.

"They did him this honor. The witness lied by claiming that his life was threatened. The prosecution did him a favor not to submit to public pressure, by allowing him to testify behind closed doors," he said.

Fredi Beleri has also commented on the delay in granting permission from the Supreme Court to allow him to be sworn in as the Mayor of Himara.

"This form of treatment proves that everything other than independent justice happens here. The fact that they don't give me permission and keep me in custody is for the purpose of not taking the office of the mayor on my part", said Beleri. /CNA
