Restricting journalists' access to the Parliament/ 26 international

Today, 26 international and Albanian organizations for media freedom and civil society have sent an open letter to the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Niko Peleshi, and the leaders of the parliamentary groups.

The organizations express deep concern about the parliamentary majority's plans to restrict journalists' access to the Assembly, by removing independent filming and limiting spontaneous contacts with MPs.

This letter requests:

• Maintaining transparency and real access for journalists to Parliament;

• Avoiding practices that limit spontaneous questions and direct contact with MPs and ministers;

• Implementation of European standards for media freedom as part of Albania's commitments on the path to EU integration.

This is an appeal from 26 organizations that emphasizes that restricting journalists' access would be a dangerous step backward for democracy and transparency in the country./ CNA
