They consumed candy found on the street/ The head of pediatrics reveals the

The Head of Pediatrics in Korça, Robert Rado, has provided details regarding the health condition of the three children who ended up in the hospital because they had consumed three candies found on the street.

Rado said that the condition of the two children, 11 and 8 years old, has improved, while the 3-year-old child has had more health problems and due to complications was sent for intubation.

After showing signs of improvement, the 3-year-old child was removed from intubation.

"Then, the current situation of the three girls is this. These were three girls of different ages: one was 11 years old, the oldest; the other was 8 years old; and the youngest was 3 years old. The oldest had not shown any problematic symptoms. She only had mild effects of the substance she had used. She was given special help, she was kept under observation.

The 8-year-old girl had symptoms related to the substance she had taken. Appropriate intervention was given in accordance with the condition and today she is better, with normal parameters, alert, responsive and improving.

The problem was with the youngest girl, 3 years old, who came in serious condition, with symptoms from the nervous system, as a result of the effect that these substances have on her. It is a type of substance that is part of cannabinoids, cannabis derivatives, which are traded or found, I don't know exactly, in stores where they are sold in the form of candies or aribos. We also have the box of the substance that she had taken. These, if used without criteria and in pediatric ages, give consequences such as we saw yesterday.

We have had cases of intoxication from medications or other substances used for various purposes, but we have not had a case at this age, especially 3 years old, with this type of substance. This was the first one that came in serious condition and we were forced to intubate the child in the adult resuscitation service. After seeing the condition, we consulted and, based on the circumstances and the time, we decided to intubate him to give him the necessary help and save his life.

Currently, as we speak, we have come from the adult intensive care unit, where the child has been extubated, that is, removed from the ventilator. He maintains his vital parameters, he is on oxygen in a satisfactory state within the norms. But again, it is too early to give final opinions on the progress, because these substances have long-term effects. The effects can last from 6 hours to 3 days, while their elimination from the body, through the renal system, that is, urination, can take up to 15 days.

We emphasized this because we do not know where the child found them, where they gave them to the child, or what exactly happened. These are problems that belong to the competent authorities, which we have notified since the moment the case arose. Whether they found them, whether they bought them, whether they gave them to him, we do not know.

From the information we received through parents and close people, it is said that they consumed two pieces. Two, that is, in the form of candies or aribos that they were. However, considering the dosage of the content that these products have, for a small child it was a very large dose. And as I pointed out, the dosage is not accurate, so even though it says two, he may have consumed even more than that.

We have not been able to measure the levels of these substances in the blood, and this makes the situation even more problematic. This requires special laboratories that measure the levels of the substance.

The tests were taken, the tests were discussed, but our main goal was the immediate treatment of the child, as he was in a serious condition. The problem is that these types of substances do not have an antidote, that is, a counteraction that blocks their effect. We treat symptomatically, maintaining the vital parameters for the child: heart function, respiratory system, blood circulation and nervous system.

"The child came with seizures, vomiting and convulsive seizures, which indicates that the substance had an effect on the central nervous system," said the head of pediatrics, Rado./ CNA
