The European organization for Nature Conservation "Euro Natur" expressed concern that "the Vjosë-Narta area in Albania, known for its variety of birds and lagoons, faces serious threats from the construction of the Vlora International Airport".

In a newly published report on biodiversity in the Western Balkans, "Euro Natur", which has become part of a network with several Albanian organizations for the protection of nature in Albania, says that "the construction of Vlora International Airport, part of a broad vision to transform this refuge, rich in biodiversity, in a center of tourism and infrastructure, threatens to extinguish the living voices of the lagoon".

"The government's reassessment of protected areas to facilitate the airport project has excluded 310 hectares of important habitat in the south of the country, worrying environmentalists," the organization's report said.

According to the Albanian authorities, Vlora Airport will complete the works within this year and will be operational in the summer of 2025.

But as the drone footage filmed by the Voice of America these days proves, the work so far is far from the expectation that the airport will be completed within this year.

The Albanian authorities ignored a request of the Berne Convention, last September, to stop the works on the Airport, until a new Environmental Impact Assessment was carried out.

Several environmental organizations are conducting a legal battle in the Administrative Court of Tirana where they have sued a series of government institutions for the procedures followed for the airport construction project and the start of the works.

The Albanian government has declared for its part that the airport is of primary importance for the tourist development of this region and the area of ??Akarnia, where it is being built, includes an area which during the communist period was used for the landing of military planes./ VOA
