Sea issue with Greece/ Former commander: 16 years of difficult discussions, lack

Former Commander of the Naval Fleet, Vladimir Beja, commented today on the reopening of discussions on the maritime issue with Greece, as this week this topic was on the agenda of the Greek Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias, during the meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana.

In a television studio, Beja said that this is a difficult issue for the Albanian side, due to the lack of reciprocity from the neighboring state.

According to him, Albania today enjoys a UN-recognized territorial sea of ??8,000 square kilometers, which has the same concept and legal protection as land.

"The separation with Italy was very difficult for the Albanian side because we were a little partisan at the time. Our technology was weak. Today it is no longer like that. Albania is not the country of '89 or '92. We have been discussing the agreement with Greece for 16 years because Greece is a difficult partner, especially with Albania because there is no minimum of reciprocity. The Italian side has been correct with us, we were a closed country. It was the first communication I had with the Italian admirals. They behaved correctly and brought us technological measurements of the time so that the error between us was as small as possible, the fact that has not been opposed by international organizations or the law, the border with Italy has been perfectly divided. Today Albania enjoys a territorial sea from the UN, 8 thousand square kilometers. The territorial sea has the same concept and legal protection as land. We have encountered difficulties with Greece", - said Beja./CNA
