"Meta" blocks hackers connected to Iran on "WhatsApp".

"Meta" has warned the campaigns of two candidates for president of the United States to be vigilant, after it revealed that a group of hackers linked to Iran tried to use WhatsApp, the application for sending messages.

Meta is the latest technology company to warn of potential hacker threats to November's US presidential election between Vice President Kalama Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Earlier, Google and Microsoft disclosed similar attempts attributed to Iran.

WhatsApp accounts linked to an Iranian "threat actor" sent messages claiming to be technical support for AOL, Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft, according to Meta.

"Meta" said that these accounts involved in "social engineering" were blocked.

Earlier this month, US intelligence confirmed that Iran hacked the Trump campaign.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other federal agencies said in a joint statement on August 20 that Iran has decided to interfere in the US election "to foment division and undermine confidence in our democratic institutions".

The Trump campaign blamed Iran on August 10 for the hacking of internal messages.
