The Justice Department accused TikTok on Friday of collecting information about US users about their views on issues such as gun control, abortion and religion.
Government legal representatives wrote in documents filed with the Court of Appeals in Washington that TikTok and its Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, used an internal system called Lark to enable TikTok employees to speak directly with ByteDance's engineers in China.
According to federal officials, employees of the Tik-Tok network used the Lark system to send sensitive data about American users, information that is being stored on Chinese servers and to which employees of the company ByteDance in China have access.
Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Tik-Tok had been tracking users who had viewed content related to the LGBTQ community.
The documents filed in court today mark the first major government action in the legal battle over the future of the social media platform used by more than 170 million Americans.
According to a law signed by President Joe Biden in April, the company could face a ban in a few months if it does not cut ties with the ByteDance company./ VOA
