Tech firms face tougher age checks online

Ofcom has warned that social media sites could be banned for under-18s if they don't comply with new online safety rules.

The media regulator has published a draft child safety code of practice, which requires social media firms to have stronger age-checking measures, and Ofcom chief Dame Melanie Dawes warned that any company breaking them could increase the minimum user age to 18 years.

Spokespeople for Meta and Snapchat said the firms had additional protections for children under 18 and offer parental tools to control what children can see on their platforms.

A Meta spokesperson said the firm wanted young people to "connect with others in an environment where they feel safe".

It is Ofcom's job to enforce new, stricter rules following the introduction of the Internet Safety Act, which sets out what tech firms must do to comply with that law./ CNA
