As you think about what could be a password to secure your data, you will have to "squeeze" your brain a little more so that the codes you choose are not easily accessible to hackers. NordPass, the password management network, has published the list of the 200 most used passwords in the world throughout 2023.

Of the 20 most common passwords in the world, 17 of them can be cracked in less than a second, so think twice before entering "123456" or "password" and be more creative in securing your online accounts.

The most popular passwords are some of the laziest combinations, even as cybersecurity threats continue to grow and more than 53 million Americans have been affected by personal data theft, AAG reports.

The NordPass study showed that 86% of cyber-attacks use stolen credentials, and online accounts, emails and passwords make up almost 20% of the most sold items on the dark web.

"Admin", which has not been on the 200 most used list for the past five years, came in second place this year.

"It's one of those passwords that people don't bother to change," the report said. "Instead of improving their password creation habits, Internet users have gone the other way by sticking to already pre-configured passwords."

The password "123456" has continued to top the list for the most common password in the world for the past five years.

"Password" is another widely used code that tops the list every year.

"UNKNOWN" ranked first for social media platforms, financial accounts and smartphones.

Names are also popular password choices for users around the world.

"Isabella" is the second most used password in Austria this year, while "Katerina" was in 11th place in Greece.

A combination of a name and number, such as "Flores123" ranked fifth in Mexico and "Kento123!" it was number 17 in Malaysia.

UK residents' love for football is reflected in their choice of passwords with the names of English Premier League football clubs 'liverpool', 'arsenal' and 'chelsea' claiming 4th, 6th place respectively and the 10th.

Of the top 20 passwords in China, 11 of them were just numbers.

"Internet users in China often use numbers in their passwords. While '123456' is the most used password in the country, other numeric sequences, such as '111111', '000000' and '12345678' are also widely known,” NordPass pointed out./ CNA
